Description
What makes Robert Powell’s art so memorable, so precious, to those who know and love his work, as well as to those who come to them anew? Rob was an architect by training before he became a full time artist. What made him transition from a recorder of images via photos and technical drawings, and a person who once counted the number of bricks in a façade he was drawing for the sake of accuracy, to an artist rendering indelible, transcendent works of both documentation and art?
Perhaps the answer lies in Rob’s personality. Having grown up with his work in the 1990s, I did not have the chance to meet him when I was in school. I was away at college and university when he left Nepal towards the end of 2003 for the balmier climate of Koh Samui to protect his weakening lungs.
