Description
Shankar Nath Rimal is an engineer whose range of works covers many disciplines. Born in 1935 to Sita Devi Rimal and Devendra Nath -Rimal, Shankar N. Rimal was introduced to Sanskrit and Nepali languages at the age of four, under the tutelage of his grandfather Sri Shiva Nath Rimal.
Shankar N. Rimal studied at Bengal Engineering College (now IIEST), and in 1957 he received a degree in Civil Engineering from Calcutta University.
Rimal’s contribution to modern architecture in Nepal begins with the designing of Shahid Gate in 1958-60, continuing with many projects like the Royal Nepal Academy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Currently, he is designing the temple complex at Champadevi in Kathmandu for Champadevi Eco-Friendly Pvt. Ltd. In a career that spans six decades, Rimal has designed monuments, gates, memorial parks, private residences, tirthas and temples, including the Unmatta Bhairav Temple in the Pasupatinath premises and the Vishnu Temple in Singapore. He has authored Lumbini Chakra: Geometric Interpretation of the Archaeological Remains (1998).
Rimal’s luminary works include the redesigning and standardization of the National Flag of Nepal in 1962,bringing it to its current form and usage. (See photo on the right)
Rimal works for Shankar N. Rimal Engineers Architects. He is Secretary General of Nepal Art Council, President of New Art Circle, and Member of Society of Modern Art. Recipient of several awards and recognitions from the Government of Nepal, including Arniko Rastriya Sanman from the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts, and Lifetime Achievement Awards from various organizations, Rimal’s creativity has been exhibited in various national and international platforms and in solo exhibitions.
In capacity as a private consultant, Rimal has provided his services to the Government of Nepal, UNDP, UNESCO, FAO, WFP, and the World Bank. He has been elected President of Nepal Engineers Association for four terms and has served as a member of National Planning Commission for the Government of Nepal.
Rimal lives with his wife Sashy Rimal at Naxal Nagpokhari, Kathmandu.
